Plural infusions breast

I have had a stressful 9 weeks with Dasatinib. My left breast initally was presenting symtoms of imflammatory breast cancer.
I had to have a mamogram, ultrasound, xrays, and then a 3 week wait for an MIR scan and back to breast clinic to find I had
fluid around my lungs, heart and in breasts from Dasatinib. Then my leukaemia consultant decided to put me on steroids/water
tablets. The breast clinic didn't discover what was really wrong. I had had a cough for several months and was short of breath.
Initially I was treated as if I had asthma. It was all due to the fluid around the heart/lungs. My leukaemia consultant said he
had never come across this before ie fluid in the breast.

Linda

Dear Linda,

sorry to hear you have had such a problem with side effects from dasatinib. It is true that a minority of patients develop pleural effusion. I think it sounds like you have had quite an extreme form in that it has also effected the tissue surrounding your breasts. I assume your consultant is going to change your therapy asap? i.e to nilotinib or one of the other TKIs that are in trial? Where are you treated?

I am at the CML Patient Day tomorrow- in Glasgow (just arrived) so will ask the clinicians on your behalf if this effect (on breast tissue) has been seen before and get back to you.

Sandy

Hi Sandy, Thanks for your reply. I am based at the Eastbourne Hospital and at this moment I am still on Dasatinib 100mg. I have had 3 weeks of water tablets and 10 days of steroids.I saw my own doctor yesterday and she has put me on a lower dose of water tablets for two weeks. I told her that my consultant has never seen fluid going into the breast like that before.
My doctor said she has seen it before with people who have heart failure.I am having an echo cardo done on Wednesday. I am also seeing the breast consultant on the 29th. I have also another problem with renal impairment..not sure if that is to do with the drug.
Am i likely to get pleural effusions again?
Good luck in Glasgow and thanks for your advice.
Linda.

Hi Linda

I developed a pleural effusion after being on dasatinib for 2.5 years. I had nine months of worry and trying different tablets, I even came off all drugs for over 4 months whilst the effusion was going down.

After further investigation (taking a sample of the fluid) I had a kyle leak from my ly,phatic system, which was seeping into the lining of my lung. I had a CA125 blood test done and they then thought I had a secondary cancer but after invstigation, I didnt Mine was caused by dasatinib.

I am now on nilotinib which has been good so far. I did try imatinib but my lung started to fill up again

You may find like me that it is the dasatinib that caused your problems

Hope this helps, in the fact that you are not alone x
