Anyone contracted their donors allergies after a SCT??

Dear all,

I had an allo stem cell transplant nearly a year ago now and went on hoiliday in September. After a day in the sun I started itching and ended up with a very nasty prickly heat rash.

My brother (my donor) has always suffered with prickly heat rashes and it is seems as if I've contracted it.

I spoke to my haematologist (Dr Ho) at Kings today and he said it is rare and not 100% proven but he has seen it several times and believes it is highly likely in my situation, he says I might be stuck with it now. I'm not complaining one little bit as his cells have potentially cured me, I just find it very bizarre.

Does anyone on here believe they have contracted their donors allergies or heard of it before?

All went well and I'm still PCR U and my bloods are all within normal ranges now. :-)

Thanks in advance,
Martyn

Hi Martyn

My husband has had ezcema since his transplant (4 years ago) he also has developed food allergies which they think he has inherited from the donor - all very bizarre as my husband had the constitution of an ox before he became ill - he is allergic to many skin products and anything with certryl alchol in it which is pretty much most things - even the ezcema society have found it hard to help him in recommending products but a prety good trade for his life !! whilst annoying the alternative was far worse - i personally find it fascinating if not a little frustrating.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your reply. It's really weird isn't it?! I posted this on the Canadian site and there were several people on there that have also experienced similar allergies.

It is very frustrating although I'd never want my own marrow back! You're right it is a good trade!

All the best,
Martyn
