Fake Tan

Hi everybody

Haven't posted in a very long time but do regularly pop in and out of the site to catch up with all the news/current topics for discussion.

Am going on holiday later this week to Cyprus and was considering a spray tan to make me feel a little more bronzed at the start of my holiday as although I do tan eventually and am very careful with my sun exposure since being on Glivec, I was feeling extremely lilly white for the time of year. I know that it offers no protection and will of course be applying sun cream by the gallon and be sitting in the shade more often then in the sun, but thought the pyscological effect of being a little tanned may make me feel better when I don my costume !!! Has anybody used any fake tan or been spray tanned professionally since taking Glivec - has there been any problems ? Would be great to have any feedback you guys may have.

Many thanks ..... Karen

Hi ,i have spray tans all the time and never had any problems ,feel great as im normally ghostly white, have a gud hol, love kath

Hi Karen,

I've been using self tanners for the past two years. I've never had any problems. I too look very pale if I don't use them. I now use one on my face which gives you a real boost otherwise I look ghostly white. Give it a go and enjoy your holiday! Maybe the next time I go to Hammersmith I will ask if the chemicals in fake tans would be harmful.

Take care

Angela

Hi all
I've used fake, spray and St Tropez to no ill effects and carry on doing so. I believe the benefit I get from looking healthier and feeling good far outweighs any risks - I really have not heard of any risks at all, I would just say that for those with very sensitive skin, they should do a patch test first to make sure they are not sensitive to the type of tan used.
Have a great holiday. I usually have a ST Tropez then smother myself in No.30 protection all over and this works for me and I do not burn at all.

Hi all

Thanks for your replies on this - like you I too am fed up with constantly looking pale which doesn't seem a problem as much in the depths of winter, but at this time of year its a different matter. Some people may think a spray tan trivial, but thats whats so great about this site you can always count on someone supporting you - thanks - I know that Glivec messes with the melatonin in the skin and find that I burn a lot quicker than I used to but hopefully I can look more 'normal' for at least a few days !!

St Tropez spray tan here I come !!!!

Many thanks ....... Karen

I'm glad that Karen has started the ball rolling on the subject of one's appearance... I've kept putting off posting this query because it sounds a bit frivolous, but here we go: my hair is longish and as grey as an old badger, but in pre-CML days, I pimped it up with bleached highlights. However, Glivec has softened the texture (no complaints here, Novartis!) and although they're long overdue, I've postponed new highlights because I have no idea how they'll turn out. Dare I hit the hydrogen peroxide again or will my hair break off? Or go green? Or drop out? Or what? I checked with my doc who said it's OK to go ahead, but he's not a hairdresser; and the trouble is that hairdressers ain't haematologists...if you mention 'leukaemia' and 'drugs', they think 'chemotherapy' and they won't go near you in case your hair drops out and you sue them! So please, has anyone on Glivec had highlights recently? And did they confide in their hairdresser first?

All beauty hints gratefully received!

Diana

PS Blimey, I didn't know that Glivec messes with the melatonin in your skin! Wonder what else I don't know about it...

Hi,i have highlights every 6 wks and never had any trouble, take care love kathy

quick comment on the fake lotion tans - much needed and no problems, makes you feel so much better when you are feeling so lousy. The only thing is that then everyone says 'don't you look well'.............which is a comment that really annoys me, people do expect you to look lousy if you have CML or similar.
Anyway I love my fake tan and when we went away for the weekend I tanned on top of it.

I also have had no problems whatsoever with highlights or tints. The CML definitely increased the old grey hair. My hairdresser was a little cautious and kept asking me if it itched etc but I have been fine, so between the nice reddish brown hair and the fake tan I don't look too bad!

However don't look at the waistline!

regards
Susan

Hello everyone
I've highlighted my hair with no ill effects and got a better sun tan with Glivec ! [not that is recommended to go in the sun of course, but this is me] Had holidays in Florida etc.... and no problems with skin but I did used high protection all the time. As soon as my hair grew again after the transplant I went off and had highlights .... don't expect it is recommended here again but it made me feel hell of a lot better.
So go on Diane, have those highlights !
Best wishes
Elizabeth

HELLO ALL

I HAVE HIGHLIGHTS ALL THE TIME AND HAVE BEEN FOR A FEW YEARS NOW .I HAD A SPRAY TAN LAST WEEK AS I ALSO LOOKED LIKE A GHOST AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEMS AT ALL
CAN I ASK !! WHEN I WENT ON HOLIDAY LAST YEAR I SEEMED TO BURN REALLY BAD AND I WAS USING A HIGH FACTOR 30 DO U THINK IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH OUR ILLNESS?

Once upon a time there was a grey-haired old crone who looked as though she'd happily polish off Hansel and Gretel for breakfast before lying back on the pillows and tucking into a slice of Red Riding Hood.

After a bit of humming and hah-ing and some good advice via the CML forum, she rang her faithful crimper who cast upon her a spell using his magic crochet hook, hideous swimming cap and bowlful of peroxide.

An hour or so later, she looked in the mirror - and lo and behold, there she espied Goldilocks. Or was it Rapunzel?

'All I need now,' she sighed happily, 'is a nice fake tan...'

Or was it all a dream?

Story to be continued...

I LOVE that kind of story! Cant wait for the next installment....
