BMT

Hi everyone,
This is a question for all you folks who have had BMTs, to help me give Rio some answers to questions he has.
After a BMT, what medication do you have to take and for how long? Im sure the answer will vary from person to person, but it would be good to have some idea of the possibilities. Rio knows this is an option for him in the future and so would like a bit more info - he is fed up with taking tablets every day and has been wondering if the drug regime eventually stops after a BMT.
Thanks in anticipation of your replies!

Have e-mailed you on this matter but as you say, many post BMT treatments are individual given the donor match status. As we found nothing is given or set in stone, as post BMT follow-up can send you down a different path ( e.g Max ceased his anti rejection drug (cyclosporine) rather suddenly 5 mths plus BMT due to a lung infection).

I understand your wories and concerns. I have to say that I used this website as my lifeline when Max was undergoing his treatment, and I always found someone who was able to comfort and alay my fears. Elizabeth, Sandy and Jayne have all been incredibly supportive and so informative.

As always, best wishes

Hi Kestrel

As Parmjit has already mentioned I think it very much depends on the individual and what side effects they suffer after BMT.

In our case Aaron was on Cyclosporin for approx 10 months. He was discharged with many drugs to take however these where phased out gradually until eventually he was put onto Penicillin which he will take indefinately. This is to prevent any infections due to the spleen not working correctly.

Following transplant Immunoglobulin is generally given for the treatment of infections and prophylaxis of graft versus host disease This is usually given until the antibody level returns to normal.

When the time comes Im sure your BMT team will talk you through everything. There really is just so much information. I think they drip feed it to you so you will remember it (not that I did!) Our BMT team were excellent.

Take Care.
