ONE YEAR

Hi

I just had to post today. My husband Maurice has reached one year post BMT today, and he is doing so well. We have posted on here previously, but sometime ago now, by we I mean my daughter Claire and myself. I am unable to find the previous postings to refer you to them, so I will give a brief overview of how things have gone. Maurice was diagnosed with CML in June 2005 and initially went onto Gleevec, this worked for a few months, then he had to be placed onto a trial, Dasatinib/Sprycel, via the Hammersmith Hospital, which worked for a while again, but then it was decided that as Maurice was not responding on all counts, a BMT was the way to go. Initially we were given some pretty frightening odds by the Hammersmith Hospital, which were later reduced drastically by the Royal Free, and we went ahead with the transplant. Maurice had the mini allograft, and unfortunately did not have a sibling donor, however the 80% unrelated donor, has worked a treat, and we are progressing so very well. Maurice goes back to work on Monday, for the first time since the transplant, and we are having a family get together this evening, to celebrate his first birthday, and just by way of a coincidence, it is our son's 30th birthday tomorrow. So we will all be having a good celebration. I hope this gives encouragement to all of you out there who are going through the mill with Leukaemia. We are still taking each day as it comes, and visiting the Royal Free regularly, but despite a couple of blips, i.e. infections etc., Maurice has progressed well. Long may it continue and good luck to you all. Jacky Carter xx

Hi Jacky
Thank you so much for updating on Maurice. He has done exceptionally well and I hope you have a wonderful 1st birthday celebration this evening.
Prognostics from various establishments do vary and in the end it comes down to the patient and how lucky they are, how well they cope, how strong, etc.... I didn't have a particularly good prognostic but here I am 2 1/2 years on after my sct.
With very best wishes to Maurice for many many more SCT birthdays.

Delighted to hear such good news.
I have just been for my pre-transplant blood tests; 15 test tubes!
I have finished work today and it is really happening now.

I am beginning to get scared so I am really pleased to hear how well Maurice is doing.

Enjoy tonight.

Susan

Thank you for the good news story! How wonderful for you both and your family. Hope you celebrated well!
Wishing you many more SCT birthdays,
kestrel

Just to say a great time was had by all on Friday evening. Maurice went back to work - on reduced hours - yesterday, so all is well in the Carter world at this time. One slight correction to my excitable post above, Maurice was on the AMN107 trial, which I believe was then name Nilotonib (not sure of spelling). They thought he would use the Disatanib post transplant, thus my confusion with medication, but this seemed to affect him initially, and so far the results have been good enough for him not to need it, i.e. no residue of leukaemia.
Thanks for the responses to our post.
