Spleen Discomfort

Hi,
I started this whole CML journey back in May when I was admitted to ER in a bit of a state. My WBC was 539,000 they thot I had AML I guess so gave me 6 days of chemo and a couple of dialysis procedures to try and get WBC back down. I became very Neutropenic and had to have 9 blood transfusions and 5 platelette transfusions, I joked that I had enough American blood (I am British living in US) to run for President! I went on Glivec July of this year and my recent trip to M.D Anderen showed still 96% PC in bone marrow :( I guess it is early days. My questions is I had alot of spleen discomfort obviously before diagnosis then some after, well a "full" feeling in my rib. This all had gone away for a couple of months but now it is back, I had my CBC's checked about 3 weeks ago and they were normal. Does anyone ever experience spleen discomfort randomly like this???

I can only offer the following which I was told at Kings College Hospital in London.

When the spleen gets very enlarged small parts of it can die and where these are at the surface they can rub on the membrane covering the spleen and cause mild discomfort - I experienced this for a couple of years on and off but it finally went away - probably due to the chemo I had for my transplant as it does damage the spleen anyway. Your medical man should be able to feel the spleen and tell if it is still enlarged so I would get that checked. When mine was huge it went down a bit very quickly on drugs but took several months to finally get down to a near normal size.

Hope this helps.

Hey Russ,
That all makes sense as I had 6 days of chemo soon after dx. Now I have my first cold so my atention has switched to that!!!
