Pain in dad's hip

Hi All

Am looking for words of wisdom again.

Dad was diagnosed with CML in September and treatment has been going well. Dr is really pleased with his all his counts. However over past few days he has been experiencing a pain in his hip. He has been taking pain killers all day (this is very unusual for him, he will usually only take 1 Anadin if he is in any sort of pain!). Could this be linked to CML? Also what sort of painkillers should you take if you are taking Glivec?

Not sure if you need any more details to help but just ask if you do.

Many thanks

Sharon

Hi Sharon

I don't know how old your father is. My mother is 81 and was dx about 5 years ago and has been on Glivec for 2 years now.

She, too, suffers from pain in her hips / pelvis / tops of her thighs. Following advice from posters on here, I made a point of asking her consultant about this at the last clinic. I'd read that it wasn't a good idea to take paracetomol because of the implications for the liver.

Mum's consultant said her liver readings were fine and she should perhaps intersperse paracetomol with brufen. She also prescribed magnesium tablets for her to chew.

These don't seem to have helped, I'm sorry to say. Mum says she takes 'a long time to get going' but once she's up and moving about the pain decreases but doesn't entirely go away.

So no easy answer - sorry. However, the consultant did say that this was a side-effect she was becoming increasingly aware of. My mother goes to a Haematology clinic rather than a Leukaemia clinic so I guess maybe her consultant doesn't see that many CML cases.

Also, I suppose at 81, it would be surprising if my mother didn't have some sort of joint stiffness and pain. I do, at 61!!!!!

I hope your father feels better soon.

Hi Sharon,
Sorry to hear your father's had this problem.
He should let the doctors at the hospital know about this problem I think.
Bone pain can be related to cml, and also is a side effect of Glivec, so may be either.

In so far as pain killers are concerned, Paracetamol containing pain killers can be used in moderation, but I would suggest NOT at the full maximum dose for lengthy periods of time. This is because both Glivec and Paracetamol are broken down in the liver and can potentially cause some problems in this area. Using an anti inflammatory such as Ibuprofen can be useful, along with Paracetamol, however, care must be taken in terms of the side effects of anti inflammatory medication. Commonly cause stomach problems such as heartburn / indigestion etc, but also can have an effect upon the clotting mechanism of the blood.

Hope the situation improves soon

Best Wishes

Paul

Hi

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I will pass the information on. My dad is 60. He had hip pain before his dx I think so possibly not the Glivec and as we don't know how long he has had CML it is hard to know if it is CML or just an age thing. He has an appt with haematologist on Tues so he is going to mention it then.

It's so good to talk to people who seem to know what is going on as my family and I still feel like we're groping in the dark.

Many thanks again

Sharon

Hi

Dad went to his appt on Tuesday and apparently the Dr didn't really say anything about the pain, in fact was quite disinterested by all accounts. The pain had gone within a day so I'm sure it wasn't anything to worry about. Everything else was fine.

Hi Sharon, my daughter (15) was diagnosed with CML in May. Just lately she has been having horrendous pain in her hips too. I think it may be a side effect of Glivec. She is taking codeine at the mo for her headaches but this did not stop her pain in the hips. It was so bad she was nearly crying. Have to see consultant next week so I will ask then. Dawn xxx
