Radiation in the workplace

Dear All

I am hoping someone can help me with this one. I work in a school which is a single-storey building, and on the roof about 5m above my head a strange 'mast' has appeared over the summer holidays.

My headteacher has said it is a 'point to point' transmitter which will enable our local library [1km down the road] to use wi-fi with their computers. She has been assured by one of the school governors that it is safe - but I can't help being a bit concerned.

I have expressed my concerns to her, and she is trying to find out more information for me, firstly from the local council who own the school and the library, and secondly from the school governor who gave the assurance of safety.

Does anyone else have any experience of things like this? And even if it is deemed to be safe, am I at any increased risk because I have CML?

All your thoughts are very welcome.

Regards to all, Janet

Hello Janet, Hopefully I can put your mind at rest as well as suffering from CML, I am a local authority Health and Safety Adviser in Scotland. During the school holidays I researched this subject so that I could risk assess the situation at one of our schools with a similar antennae. This risk assessment showed the overall risk to be low, if a person was more the 1 metre from the antennae. The antennae on our schools are usually on 3 metre masts mounted high on buildings. If you email me at paul.ralph@moray.gov.uk, I can let you have a copy of the assessment and discuss it further.

Regards
Paul

Dear Paul

Thank you so much for your quick and reassuring response - I will email you if that is OK, and I would be very grateful if you could email me a copy of the risk assessment.

You have also reminded me to ask for the risk assessment for our school, which I had forgotten about - thank you! :-)

Regards, Janet
