Consumtion of Glivec ,It's good and bad effects and the ways to lower the bad effects................. please Help.

Hi everyone, My name is Diwas and i am from Germany. Last year my mom was very sick and had to be admitted in Hospital in Nepal. My parents Live in Nepal. Doctors in Hospital told that she has high White Blood Cells abt. 5 times higher than normal. The Doc gave her Glivec 100 mg and she has to take it 4 times a day everyday. Since she has started taking the medicine the condition is better but she has gained abt 6 kgs and her eyes are swollen. Is it normal????? i heard it is because of the consumption of glivec. Doctors say its quite normal to gain weight and swollen eyes... but he does not give anything against swollen eyes.. does anyone can tell me what can she do against it? i do not fully trust on doctors of Nepal. and my parents do not have ideas of internet and finding solutions of this problem themselves. I am very far away from my home and my parents and i want to help her look and feel normal again. What can i do abt it?

waiting for the answers desperately.
Thankyou.

The only thing I've found useful is a drug called "Lasix:"Flourisomide". The side effects from that are those of a fairly high-powered water pill "diuretic". This has its own problems. For me its been a tradeoff so far. I've chosen to go without the "water pill" and avoid the bathroom urgencies. All I have from my own personal experience on this one.

Francis,

I sometimes wake up with swollen or puffy eyes and it is always because I have not been drinking enough liquids (or too much of the wrong liquid LOL).

As soon as I increase my water intake I return to normal. I learned that very valuable lesson on this website some years ago.

Hope it helps, Johnh

Hi Diwas,

I have only recently been diagnosed so am pretty new at this but I also have water retention and I fully agree with John that keeping your body fully hydrated is the best way to help. My nutritionist also advised on drinking dandelion tea and eating celery and although the dandelion tea does make me slightly nauseous, it seems to work a treat. After doing it for a few days I have ankles again and not just tree trunks.

Good luck to your Mother,
Lynn
