New Travel Insurance questions

Just been trying to sort my family travel insurance out, I just go with one of the high street types as I don't have any specific concers about my CML

However i have been asked to provide latest Heamoglobin and White blood cell counts. Tis is something I never record as i am always told they are within normal ranges.

anyone else come across this line of questioning? as i have never been asked before (3 years), if anything it is just PCR number

Hi Rob
I must admit that last year I went with a specialist company and got my CML covered and they didn't even ask anything like that! Just as a comparator try http://www.medicitravel.com/ may be worth a go
Hope you have a good holiday!

We have family travel insurance (annual policy no less) with Age Concern - bit embarrassing as we are not Aged...but Age Concern will cover everyone - you do not need to be aged. They also cover my CML at no extra cost. They ask a few sensible questions like whether you have been admitted to hospital whether there has been any change in your medication, any investigations pending etc etc. All quite sensible really but nothing like as detailed as blood counts. With Age Concern basically if your CML is stable they will cover it without charging an extra premium. We took out the policy around 9mths ago so maybe someone else has more up to date info. Hope this helps.

Dear Rob,
go to FAQ"s on the main menu and click on the Travel icon. I have updated the list of insurance companies and their contact numbers and direct website links etc. on that page so it might be of some help. Age Concern seems good as both Annie and Janet have indicated.... but there are others.

Sandy

Annie and Rob -

I have had a family policy with Age Concern for the last 2 years, and would agree with Annie wholeheartedly - good coverage of CML and sensible questions! I wasn't aware that it is covered at no extra cost, it did seem a bit expensive at £500, but that is family [4] and multi=trip worldwide annual insurance [includes USA], with no excesses. Maybe my CML costs more given that I am less than 4 years from diagnosis, this is one of their questions. I have decided to treat it as another expense like car insurance - if I want to travel, and I DO!! - then I must pay the premium.

The policy was renewed last week and the questions were still the same. The underwriter is Fortis insurance, if that helps.

Happy travelling! :-)

Janet

Just for comparison - our policy is annual multi trip covering myself, healthy husband and 4 kiddies. Cost is £119 per annum (total for all of us). The reason that it is so much lower is that ours is just for Europe (not worldwide - crucially not including the US). We have no plans to venture beyond Europe so it suits us well. I am also more than 5 years (6 years infact) since diagnosis - maybe that helps a little.

Thanks Sandy

I have no real issue about not being covered for CML issues, as I don't have any I was just really wondering if anyone had been asked for these blood counts in the past as I have'n't

BTW it is AMEX and I get mutlti-trip worldwide family cover for £140 (excluding stuff like skiing etc)

Hi Been trying to get covered for annual worldwide multi-trip,
Amex, Fortis, Age Concern,Medicitravel all declined!!! I have CML for 2years BCR/ABL at 0.0268% so no problems, but nobody seems to want me.

Have had CML for 3 years now -at first a big problem to find an insurer but found
JD Travel Insurance -Gill Noble
01689 859 102
www.jdtravelinsurance.co.uk

At first they suggested I use City Bond Sure travel with medical screening-phone call and questions etc but no questions re blood counts etc- about £ 600 annual
Then they offered Fortis Travel with a questionnaire -basically if you have regular hospital appointments with a consultant i.e. a check up as an outpatient only and say take Glivec they will cover CML -need to sign a declaration
(Dont know if procedures such as bone marrow biopsy count as in patient-grey area.Check it out.)
(Bone marrow transplants etc more complicated so ask)

Self and wife for us- annual worldwide but not USA- £160
If USA as well costs more

However if an in patient then more complicated
Give them a call-they cover all illnesses

Initially agreed trying to find cover is a nightmare but use a broker such as this one and it seems a lot easier
Best wishes
