Grapefruit

Hi Everyone

I have a rather silly question. We, Glivec takers, are not supposed to drink grapefruit juice as it affects the absorbtion of the medication.  I have religiously avoided eating grapefruit as well for the past 15 months, but I wonder if this is necessary. A neighbour has just given me a jar of grapefruit/orange marmalade so it got me thinking. Does avoiding the juice extend to avoiding the fruit?

Has anyone wondered about this?

Best wishes

Chrissie

Hi Chrissie,

I must be even worse than you - I won't even eat grapefruit flavored sweets!

But in my heart of hearts I know I'm being OTT.

A couple of years ago when I went to friends' for a meal - they gave me an apéritif that I drank without asking what it was - in fact it was rosé wine with grapefruit juice (so I later found out);  later that evening, I went home & got up in the night to go to the loo, I passed out & had to go to hospital for tests (nothing serious was found); I often wonder whether it was a coincidence, a psychosomatic reation or a real reaction to the grapefruit.  One thing's for sure I always ask what's in a drink now before accepting it!

Hi Chrissie,

Your question isn't a silly one! My understanding is that we shouldn't have grapefruit in any form whilst taking any of the TKis. I don't even use a shampoo with citrus!! Now whose being silly.. Me!

Now, as I am about to take Bosutinib, (waiting for bloods to behave) I have been told that I cant have oranges either, fresh or in marmalade and also no pomegranate. I don't mind the poms but I love oranges and my very favorite fruit is grapefruit!  Hey ho..

All the best

Ali

Thanks for your replies. Like you. Ali, grapefruit is my favourite fruit. Can't say how it would taste now, but oranges taste very metallic now I'm on Glivec, so I avoid them.  Guess my husband will scoff the marmalade - no trouble!

best wishes
