Glivec and abdominal pain

Just wondering if anybody else suffers from really bad stomach pain and is taking Glivec. I have been on Glivec now for four years, I have always tolerated it well, with the odd symptoms but nothing I couldn't cope with. Over the last 12 months tho I have been suffering from severe abdominal pain, mainly in the upper right rib area. It is steadily becoming worse. It comes and goes, but seems to flare up at least once a month. I have found that if I don't take my Glivec for 2 days, it eases alot. I then start them again and a few weeks later I am back to square one. I feel like I am going round in circles!!.

I have been in "remission" now for 3 years and 4 months and I feel I have been really lucky with my treatment working etc. I know it isn't always this straight forward for some. I do feel tho that the pain I am suffering is due to Glivec and I actually feel like it is eating away at my insides. I get heartburn etc and I am totally fed up of it now!

I would love to come off Glivec, even just for a "holiday" to see if it is the Glivec causing my discomfort. I don't want to push my luck tho and have my Cml come back and be resistant to it. I am 31 and don't want to be in pain anymore, or is it a small price to pay for being alive.

Has anyone else come off Glivec, long term or a short period. I go to clinic in two weeks and I intend to speak to my consultant about this. I don't think he will be happy with me coming off glivec, But it's really something I want to try.

Anyway, hope everyone else is well.

Hi Liz,

I would strongly recommend you not to put up with this kind of side effect and ask your consultant to consider changing your therapy to either nilotinib or dasatinib

Best wishes,

Sandy
