You are here

Good news from South Africa.

Hi Sandy and all my fellow members of the CML club.
I have posted the news on our FaceBook forum but for those who do not follow it here goes.
I have just had my 6 monthly consultation with my Haematologist and the great new is:
I remain BCR/ABL negative or "undetected" as the RT-QPCR test states.
Officially I have been off Gleevec for 5years and 6 months to date.
Unlike many of my peers on our "CML Patients In TFR (Treatment Free Remission)" Facebook Group, I have suffered no side effects at all after stopping treatment. My only side effect is - Feeling great!
Truly blessed is the way I feel and my wish is that you all will be in that same space in the future.
As this is unchartered waters, future predictions are hard to call, but hopefully my body has learned to cope with the residual CML present (All be it at very low and undetectable levels) and suppress it forever.
Best wishes to you all.
Basil Jacobs

Hi Basil,

thanks for the update on this forum. Many will be very heartened by your experience of stopping. If only we could find out why some people (like you) can successfully stop therapy without molecular relapse but others can't. I hope the DESTINY trial may give us some answers.
Meanwhile, many congratulations on over 5 years of TFR.

best... Sandy
