A three-part PBS film “The Emperor of All Maladies” is airing this week on OPB and other public television stations. The second episode includes discussion of the cancer breakthrough drug Glivec, developed by OHSU researcher, Brian Druker. Before the drug, it was not uncommon for patients who were diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, or CML, to be given a prognosis of just a few years.
We’ll talk with two of the first patients to benefit from the drug — in the first human trials that started in 1999 — both of whom are still taking the drug and are cancer-free.

I met and shared some good times with Judy when I went to Portland to join the Phase 2 trial in August 1999. It is good to hear her talk about how it was in those days, and still so positive all these years on.
