For nearly ten years I battled chronic myeloid leukemia until the daily chemotherapy became so toxic that I had to undergo a procedure that was a coin toss of success: a bone marrow transplant. For two years I documented, almost daily, my struggle through one of the toughest procedures man has ever conceived. I had a matched unrelated transplant in 1996. It was really tough. REALLY tough. Indeed I was seriously ill for 3 years and then just ill for a year and then in year 5 started to think maybe it had all been worth it and I had pulled though and I had a really good year.
In my case though about 5 years post transplant it was discovered that I had a pcr reading showing things were not as good as first thought. So I then went on to imatanib.
