The word "Leukemia"

Categories:

I'm in remission and don't really think about that I have CML- leukemia. I use to hear the word once in awhile throughout my life but never gave it much thought until it knocked on my door. I'm fine and don't think about it unless I am reading a fiction suspense book and there is the dreaded word or I will watch a movie and here the word comes again. I burst out crying. I don't get it. I'm fine I think mentally dealing/coping with leukemia but when I hear the name I fall apart. Could someone suggest how to alleviate this or lessen its affect over me.

Hi there - great that you are in remission, I am looking forward to that day!!  It is a funny word, leukaemia.  Since being daignosed I have wondered whether it is the "right" word for what we have - like the word "cancer", it carries a weight and a whole set of assumptions, nuances, interpretations and so on.  But they are both just words and they do not describe the individual experiences of people.  Chronic myelogenous leukaemia is a condition, a diagnosis that fits within a taxonomy of illnesses to describe a set of clinical signs and symptoms and to inform treatment.  The word is powerful and like you, I may become upset when I rest my mind on the word, the label and possibly the stigma of it.  But it is just a word.   I would suggest you maybe talk to someone about your experience and your 'difficulty' with the word, maybe take some meditation classes and maybe 'own' the word yourself and let you define how the word may or may not define you.  It sounds like you are doing so well, why let the word have the power over you it does?

Take care of yourself.
