Nauesous after almost 3 years

Categories:

Hello --

My husband was diagnosed with CML almost 3 years ago., he has been on sprycel ever since and not normally experiencing any major side effects until lately. The last few days he has been very nauseous in the morning, even throwing up. The only think we can think of is that it's from his medication. He skipped taking it one night and felt fine in the morning. Anyone have ideas/ways to treat this side effect? He normally takes his medication right before bed, but maybe he should try taking it earlier in the evening? Any advice is appreciated.

Hi there,

It does sound unusual to get nauseous from dasatinib / Sprycel after 3 uneventful (in terms of nausea) years.

Maybe it would be worth him trying to take it just before (or during) dinner. There's no reason to take it with or without food in terms of efficacy, but it might help him feel a bit better? I take mine at 19:30 every day ... which reminds me, it's that time of day again!

David.

Thanks for the input. I think tonight he will try taking it with dinner! Worth a shot.

Hi,

I used to find taking Sprycel in the evenings made me feel rough in the morning - almost a bit hung over. Since I've taken it in the mornings, I feel much better. Hope that helps!

Lloyd

Getting nauesous from Sprycel would be very unusual and not listed as a side effect. Perhaps something else is the cause.

I take mine just before retiring and with magnesium taurate (125 mg).

Having been on 100mg Sprycel for 14 months I continued with the nausea and blah days, I found these side effects last approx 6-8 hours for me (Trey or Scuba indicated Sprycel has a 5 hour life or a 5 hour half life I can't remember). I followed some of Scubas advice and started taking Turmeric/Curcumin. This seems to have helped me along with extra fluids, long walks and keeping active. I will also share my latest labs were spot on, red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit and MCH were at normal levels, first time in along time. Thanks Scuba!!!!!

Below is a link to the pharmacology of Sprycel:

Elimination
The mean terminal half-life of dasatinib is 3 hours to 5 hours. The mean apparent oral clearance is 363.8 L/hr (CV% 81.3%).

(this is why I take it just before sleeping at night. By the time I wake up it's mostly gone, did its job and have no concern about any other drug/vitamin interaction which may be undocumented).

I have also experienced nausea from Sprycel. It started for me after about 1 year occurs occasionally about 2 hours after I take my pill. Normally this is not too long after I have gone to sleep.  I am initially awakened with a "sour stomach" and things get worse from there until my stomach empties out.  I was given Onadestron for it, which has seemed to help.  Fortunately this happens only about once a month and I can deal with it.

His situation sounds a little different, but I might suggest adjusting the dose time so that the nausea comes at a more "convenient" time (if such a thing exists) that won't interfere with normal activity.  If he is lucky that may be enough to eliminate the nausea entirely.
