Vitamin D free for vulnerable patients in UK-that is us

Categories:

Hi All,

Many will have seen the announcement that all of those on the NHS/Government Covid list of at risk or very vulnerable patients will be offered free Vitamin D supplements as from January 2021 delivered to our doors I believe.I understand that the list is still alive and being used but not to such an extent as  earlier in the year.

I have received an Email  from Government/NHS asking if I would like to register for the free supplements and have done so-applications will be matched to the database of vulnerable patients and confirmation will be sent saying accepted /not accepted. If not accepted one can appeal. If you fall between the cracks ones GP is the first port of call to correct this I gather. When making the application you will need to input your NHS number.

The originaL Government  statement indicated that there was some evidence of the value of Vitamin D in promoting a healthy immune system but further research was needed and it suggested that the medical community was to focus on more definitive research to establish the precise position of Vitamin D etc..Many of on Forum have been convinced of the value of Vitamin D and sunlight as an antivirus protector and perhaps an anti cancer benefit as well-my specialist reinforced to me that winter is a time of Vitamin D depletion so one needs to up the dose so as not to end up as deficient. The relationship between susceptibilty to Covid and ill health including deprivation( living conditions ,diet etc) in some segments of our community has been explored but not fully linked in causative terms I guess.

I hope that we are moving away from a belief by some that diet, lifestyle and vitamin sufficiency is only just a fad and that established thinking now is that these factors are  very important for those who have been or are being treated for cancer.

With best wishes

John

Hi John, how did you ever get on that elusive NHS/Government Covid list of at risk or very vulnerable patients?

I have originally received a shielding letter from my GP, back in April, but my NHS number does not appear on the government database, so frustrating.

Regarding VitD, I am definitely with you, I have been taking it for years, and my levels are fine. I spoke to my oncologist, and she agrees with me. And yes, lifestyle, and that includes NOT sitting for too long a period, exercise-at whatever level suits one, and a varied diet, are definitely a life saver.

The thing is, not to get hung up on fad diets and miracle "super" foods, avoid the myth, and stick with common sense.

Stay safe,

pigeon

Brill thanks John,

I too have signed up. Thanks for sharing this I had no idea.

Gotta love our NHS

Thanks for yours John, most interesting. I shall definitely take your advice - being tested for my vitamin D levels at my next check.
