Asking to be removed from the Covid shielding list

My partner is late 40s, was diagnosed 11 years ago, been in MMR for 9.5 years, now on 20mg Dasatinb, BCR-ABL steady at 0.001 and is coming off D completely in May. Like everyone with CML he was added to the CEV list under the umbrella 'leukaemia' category but he hasn't shielded under the guidance of his consultant. Now he's had the letter saying shielding has been extended until March 31 and this time his employer (he's a key worker, but not in a medical setting) is saying they have to abide by it (having not bothered for all of last year). To us it seems barmy they're taking this stance, particularly as he's now had his first vaccine.

So our question is, has anyone on here with CML been removed from the CEV list at their request and if so, how?

I haven't tried to have myself removed from the list; I've not had the issue with an employer as effectively I'm self-employed.

My question would be why has the company changed it's view? The answer may well be that their Employer's Liability Insurance has come up for renewal, and in the light of the pandemic the insurers have changed the terms to include not having CEV people on site when Govt. guidance says they should be staying at home. If that is the reason I'm not sure even if a letter from he consultant saying he is not CEV would be effective. The insurer will be worried about the company being sued if he picked up covid at work with serious consequences - which itself would be pretty challenging to prove.

I assume he can't work effectively from home, or there is no work he can do which can be done off site.

I'd start by asking them why they have changed their view, and take it from there. Good luck.

Amazing, Covid 19 is a new virus, at the start, the uk government, and the scientists were walking on eggshells, protection was key, if they hadn’t introduced shielding instead of over 160000 predicted deaths it would have probably been treble that I, personally was and still am very concerned, being a cml “member” for the last 6 years, I grab the protection of shielding with both arms. Whist you might want to return to work, after nearly 50 years of work, I’d like to see my retirement, fit and healthy.

peter.

Hi Peter, my query wasn't about removing shielding for everyone and nor was I implying it wasn't worth it. This is about my partner's individual case based on his current prognosis.

Hi Alistair. Thank you for the advice. We are going to go back to his employer and find out what's changed, because he cannot work as effectively off site. We're also speaking to his consultant and GP. My partner feels there's a mitigating risk for coming off the list based on his current prognosis, but he will see what they say.
