Edema and low sodium at the same time

Categories:

CML - Sprycel - six years - great levels and close to remission  Live in the US.

Having a lot of issues lately with edema in lower legs swollen ankles and feel chills. But also have low sodium which seems to be a side effect of Sprycel.  As you can imagine I don’t know whether to drink electrolytes to help sodium or does that end up making me hold water. Been saying this to my doctors for a while that occasionally I battled these issues at times and got through it. Never had a situation where both are bad. Just got over a respiratory infection and not sure that is tied in at all. Went to hospital yesterday and they ran a bunch of tests and nothing bad was found but I never got to see a doctor as I waited 7 hours in a waiting room until 3:30 am and then I left. As you can imagine and may have heard hospitals are a mess here due with Covid flu and respiratory problems. Am curious if anyone has encountered these issues apart or together.  Any suggestions or hints for attacking naturally. I do use Gatorade at times and it helps sodium. But I am not sure if it worsens water in my body. My oncologist gave me water pills for edema once and I took one today. But my family doctor said to be careful as it makes sodium worse. Was told by family doctor that low sodium is extremely dangerous and it can cause seizures, coma and even death. Quite a dilemma as some of might be aware

If anyone has encountered this would love to hear as I find more answers sometimes on this forum than from doctors. You are a terrific group and doing a great job. Keep up the good work

Thank you

What dose sprycel do you take? (and your age)

Endema and low sodium at the same time can be a side effect of sprycel. Depending on your current PCR level, you could stop taking it and see if the endema resolves. Regarding low sodium - consider 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of Himalayan salt in a glass of water to balance your electrolytes. I assume your blood pressure is normal? Getting your sodium into a normal range is very important. Salt is vital for life.

Hi Scuba

Thank you so much for quick reply. My BCR is currently 0.005. I have been no pinching around this low range for a year and even reached 0.002 earlier this year.

I am feeling that the sodium is more important. Thanks for the idea.

I will say I have really utilized your posts. I adapted magnesium and Vitamin D for some hip pain and it worked.

Thank you I appreciate it
