Tasigna and diet restrictions

Hi everyone and happy new year!!
I have been on nilotinib for a year and except the three hour fasting, I knew from the beginning that should avoid grapefruit.
Are there any other diet restrictions? As recently was suggested to avoid also pomegranate. I would appreciate your answers!

Thanks in advance!

Sav_5,

I've only been told to avoid grapefruit, so I do. There is a fact sheet out there that also mentions starfruit, pomegranate, Seville oranges and other similar fruits. I eat those other fruits so seldom I don't worry about them. The concern, as I understand it, is that the fruit may elevate the amount of drug in your system and the length of time it stays there. If someone is taking a low dose could this be a good thing? It has been brought up on the LLS forum.

Good luck!

Hi miss Pat,

I have read about these fruits. I don't eat them except pomegranate that I used to eat every day in winter period. Right, Grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4 and may elevate the amount of the drug in our System. As if someone takes a lower dose, I believe it is the same as for the rest. Why could be a good thing? Thanks for your reply!

Best wishes,

Savvas

Hi, Savvas,

I think the original thought would be, if intolerable side effects or even the inability to afford the full dose of the drug kept one from being compliant, then perhaps a low(er) dose with grapefruit would work. Of course, there would be the issue with determining how much of each was enough. It's never going to happen but it was fun theorizing about it!
