early menopause

Hi everyone - glad to hear you are all well. It's been some time since I last posted but I do like to keep an eye on what's going on. I have been on Glivec since Sept 2000 and still in CCR. On the whole I have been really well, apart from joint pains and really knowing when I get a cold.

I have a question for the women on this site - I have just turned 40 (earlier this week!) and my periods appear to have stopped. It is three months since my last one and a visit to the GP this week to discuss has left him wondering if Glivec has brought on an early menopause. I have to mention this to my consultant when I next see him but this is not until February so I thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced anything similar?

I have to go back to the GP in three months and have hormone tests if necessary. As if turning 40 was not bad enough the prospect of an early menopause has left me feeling old before my time!! Any comments/advice would be welcomed.

In the meantime - have a great Xmas and New Year!

Hi Lorraine, when i was diagnosed jan/06 and put on Glivec my husband and i had been trying to get pregnant. All i can tell you is that they immidiately put me onto the pill. That has basically stopped my periods too although i do get one every three to four months. Best bet is to ask your specialist, and if you do find out please let me know. I turned 40 this summer, like you and trying to see it as life beginning... rather than over the hill!!

Hope you have a wonderful xmas too...

Thanks for your comments. I was on the pill for a number of years but came off it earlier this year. It's since then that my periods seem to have stopped - although to be honest they weren't exactly heavy for some time before then.

I will let you know what my consultant thinks in February. Though I suspect they won't know.

I guess hormone tests will only really tell me. As a mother of three teenage daughters I wasn't planning on having any more children but still don't like the thought of an early menopause!

Hope you are well
Lorraine

Hi,

My wife has cml,dx Sept 2003, at age 54.
She had gone through the menopause some years previous - relatively early, late forties I suppose.
When she was having initial investigations and prior to being diagnosed, she had a conversation with a consultant physician who asked if she's had an early menopause. At that time the only information that the doctor had was that my wife had an extremely high wbc and was being investigated by a haematologist.
I was not aware ( and still am not aware) of any link with cml, but now that the matter has been raised, I'm wondering whether early menopause is linked to the cml rather than the drug treatment?
