Having to have a BMT. I'm a bit frightened/worried by it all

Hi all

I've been living with CML for nearly 4 years now. I've proven to be resistant to most drugs available now and the very real prospect of having to go for a BMT looms before me.

I'm really terrified about the idea of it. I think it's the risks side of it that's affecting me. I'm frightened that the procedure could kill me!

Anyone gone through it? What are the lows/highs of having done so?

Really could do with some support about this.

Andy

Had a mini SCT (BMT) 3 years ago at age 52 - now well and free from cml. I was resistant to glivec and no other drugs were readily available. Happy to share my full story with you - there were bumps along the way but it was worth it.

Might be better to chat via email or phone if you want to take it further.

hi andy,
please read my diary.... i had a mini in october 2003... due to a glivec mutation.

this form of transplant is very safe and much easier to 'do' than the traditional one. there are 4 centres in the UK that are using the same protocol as i had.
hammersmith/birmingham QE/cambridge/newcastle RI.

maybe you should contact one of the centres near you and ask to talk about the possibilites for you.

if you would like to email my doctor to talk about it i know he would be pleased to help and advise about his form of transplant.
please email me on sandr1ne@aol.com and i will forward you his contact details.

best wishes,
sandy ;o)

Thanks for the reply guys

It's put my mind at rest knowing that it's worth doing. It's just like a big scary rollercoaster at the moment. I'm sure it will be good for me in the long run.

Anyway, I've my chat with my consultant at Newcastle RVI tomorrow afternoon. I've a list as long as my arm of questions to ask. I've also spoken to people at McMillan's, who were marvellous about it all. I fell more confident about the whole thing now. I'll keep you all posted about how things go.
