Val was dx last January, the day after our youngest daughter's 21st birthday, following a blood test for an unrelated viral infection, with an wbc count of 30, PH+ of 84% and 146,000 transcripts. We were told by the doctor we were incredible lucky, but at the time I can't honestly say we agreed! After a short (10 days) time on hydroxycarbamide, Val has been on 400mg Glivec since.

Her wbc was back to normal within 4 weeks, whilst May saw her PH+ down to 740.

June saw Val being photographed for a new CML brochure for the drugs company that manufacture Glivec.

This Jan saw the latest results:
wbc normal; PH+ 0.19% and 54 transcripts.

Yes there has been side effects of the tablets, yes there have been bright and dark days but our approach has been that CML is along for the ride if it can stand the pace and we have done our utmost to continue as normal.

The forum and website has been a great source of information to us and long may it continue to be.

Best wishes

Hi Phil and Val,
Congratulations on Val's latest results.
It is good to read good news. Thanks for sharing your story which is a very positive one and I am sure will help others who are struggling.

The power of CML to destroy lives has been greatly reduced by the amazing results of targetted therapy like Glivec, but being diagnosed with a cancer can leave us with a complicated set of emotions.
Even though I now have a new immune system donated by my brother I still mourn the loss of my 'health'.
The 'collatoral damage' caused by a diagnosis of CML - or any cancer- can be extensive unless we are able to 'make peace' and come to terms with it all.
Living with CML presents challenges but with support and love we can help each other understand our fears and overcome the worst of times......... and a positive attitude like yours really does help keep the negative aspects to a minimum.

Thanks for your kind words about this website, it is much appreciated - support is a two way thing ;o)
Best Wishes,
Sandy
