Hi all,
I have been wondering about the effect of alcohol on those of us with low blood levels. I don’t drink a lot, but would the amount of alcohol we drink need to be less, to stay within the drink drive laws, for a person with a Hb of around 10, than for person with a normal blood count. I wouldn’t want to be stopped, after going out for a meal and having a glass of wine and thinking I was well within limits, only to find that I was over it. Can anyone answer this please.
Best wishes

You are here
alcohol levels
Hi Les,
I had not thought of HGB levels affecting the blood alcohol levels... it is an interesting thought and maybe your doctor could shed some light on it. But I do not think that low HGB would affect your ability to stay within the legal levels for driving. Maybe getting a taxi would be one answer and you could then be confident that you can go out and still enjoy a glass or two ;o)

Hi Sandy,
The reason I asked this question is because a friend has cancer, (not cml,) and he also has fairly low blood counts at the moment. He seems to think he read something about low blood levels and a greater effect from alcohol, but he can’t remember where. I have tried looking it up on the net but I’ve not found anything. I will ask next time at HH, Apr 9th, got a lot to talk about that day but will fit it in, if there is any problem I will post the result. You are of course right, take a taxi, but problem easily solved, I’ll stick to fruit juice, the safest option.
Best wishes,
Les
