Processed meat and Bowel Cancer

Hi all, I know that this is a dedicated site for CML but the incidence of bowel cancer is very high in the UK.

This article is rather alarming particularly for those who love a traditional british breakfast!

Eating just one sausage or around three rashers of bacon a day can increase the risk of developing bowel cancer by a fifth, an expert warned.

Just 1.8oz (50g) of processed meat daily increases the chances of getting bowel cancer by around 20%.

Hi Sandy
Intersting....read all of the article...so we cannot eat meat then, because if you follow the doctrine put forward, this covers all foods that can be bought over the counter. What are we carnivors supposed to do ? I of course can take my rifle and shoot my own food, that will be free of any additives, or will it ? I for one could not face becoming vegetarian. I was gicen a set of teeth usful for eating meat, and are not suited to munching silage. Seriously looking for some constructive ideas on this.
Puzzled but happy

Hi keith,
I think the meat in question is processed rather than fresh... like sausages/bacon/salami etc that has sodium nitrate as a perservative. If you eat these sort of preserved meats often...i.e every day then the risk of bowel cancer increases. As with all things moderation is the key word ;o))
Also bowel cancer is curable if caught early enough.. screening works for this cancer, unlike CML.
I eat meat and enjoy it too. I always try to buy organic if possible... both meat and vegetables... as I feel that I am exposed to enough pesticides/addidives etc. without having the choice.

However maybe your quick draw skills could now come to the fore?

Sandy
