awaiting BMT and need travel insurance

Hi,
We have booked a week away for the family at half term before Rio's BMT in June, but now Im having trouble finding insurance because he is awaiting an operation! Has anyone any advice - Ive tried Fortis and Free Spirit to no avail so far. Has anyone awaiting BMT managed to get cover for a trip beforehand?Might need to get cover without CML included, but I wonder how that leaves us if , for example, he were to have an accident and CML needed to be considered when receiving treatment for something else?
Dont you just hate it when this happens!!!
In exasperation....

Hi Kestrel

couple of things, firstly BMT is not an operation although sometimes insurance companies refuse to recognise the difference between an operation and a proceedure.
Secondly, they may accept a letter from your consultant saying that Rio is fit and able to travel
I have insurance for my CML, both prior to and now for after my Tx from AXA PPP. I was told that you do not have to have any previous relationship with PPP to get cover, that could have changed.

If you are travelling to Europe the EHIC card may be sufficent cover.

I hope you get it sorted, it is so damm exasperating.

take care

Hi Kestrel, I picked this up from somewhere ?BCH www.InsureCancer.com
01252 780190.I don't know if that is any good also when we went to lapland we used Citybond Suretravel www.citybond.co.uk, i then had to ring someone else with James details to get an additional premium for him. Hope you can sort something out.

I am not sure that this is at all logical. How can you be refused cover because you plan to have a medical procedure in the future and after the proposed period of travel?
Rio will not be suffering any affects of the transplant as he will not have the transplant before he travels, only after he returns!
I can only suggest you do as susan suggests and ask for a covering letter from Rio's doctor.
joining you in exasperation!

Hi All,
Success! I have just sorted cover thru Freedom (who we used last Summer). All aspects of Rio's CML are covered, together with the rest of us (me, husband with high blood pressure - hardly surprising - and Rio's friend) tho I think it's quite steep at £165 for the week. Still, it's the 'peace of mind' thing. It is thru Citybond who insured you for Lapland, Julie.
I have just had a call from InsureCancer and they want to make it very complicated by speaking to Rio's Consultant about medical history, current treatment etc before being able to quote. Why is it so complicated when we know that problems for people with well-monitored CML tend to be slow-burning rather than sudden events? Still a bit exasperated, but at least it's sorted!
Best wishes to all,

glad you are sorted out, one less thing to worry about julie
