donating blood and signing up to marrow registry

My daughter Nina had planned to become a donor since I had my transplant in 2003 but somehow had never got around to it. However after reading Adrians petition, she sent it to all of her friends and promtly arranged for an appointment to donate blood and sign up to the british bone marrow registry.
Less than 1 in 12 of blood donors are also bone marrow voluteers.

According to the letter she received thanking her for joining you can remain on the register until 60. I had not realised that one could donate up to that age.
I do hope that the petition encourages others like my daughter who have healthy blood/marrow to become not only blood donors but also stem cell donors and potentially save someones life.

If you know someone who is willing to donate blood please try to encourage them to volunteer to become a bone marrow donor too.

I tried to join the bone marrow register when I donated blood recently. I was told I was too old which was a bit of a shock at age 55! I am due to give blood again soon so I will check - maybe there is a different age for registering and staying registered.

the national blood service will only take people up to 45. Anthony Nolan is 40. I only know because my friend is 43 and she was turned down by anthony nolan and just mentioned it in passing when giving blood. They had a long chat and gave her some stuff to read and said they would do it the next time if she was still keen they wouldn't do it there and then.
