Food and Diet

Hi All,

I've come across a lot of "cancer advice" surrounding food and diet and am hoping some of you can help me separate the myths from the facts.

My fiance was dx April 2007, now making good progress on imatinib. Over the last few months several well meaning relatives from the UK and US have sent me "medical advice" on food to avoid in order to reduce the growth of cancer cells, and I'm wondering whether there is anything in it (or is this just stuff that is propogated by the internet?).

The sorts of things that I'm talking about include:

  • reducing acidity levels through decreasing red meat and increasing fruit and veg (I saw on an earlier post how acidity can affect teeth)
  • reducing refined sugars and replacing with natural sugars and honey
  • increasing/decreasing fibre intake

When we talked to the consultant at HH, we were told to eat anything you want except grapefruit. At face value it seems obvious that what you eat affects your body, but there is so much muddled information out there I would appreciate help clearing it up.

Anybody got any thoughts, or experiences they can share? Or any reliable sources of information on how diet may or may not affect health for people with CML?

    Many thanks
