Elevated PCR result

Hi,

Jack's (Age 12 years) 12 month PCR has just come back higher than the 9 month result. I know this is possible but I feel extremely worried about it.

They have taken another today, but the results take 5 weeks to get back.

Jack,s PCR's were,-

At diagnosis 1.27

At 6 weeks 0.16

At 3 months 0.0043

At 6 months 0.002

At 9 months 0.0005 (3.5 log reduction)

Now at 12 months 0.0008.

It will seem like forever for the result to be avalable in 5 weeks.

Any thoughts on this.

Regards Trish.

I can understand why a result that seems to be in the wrong direction would cause you concern - I hope others will chime in here too but I wanted to reply quickly to hopefully alleviate your worries. This latest result at 12 months is to all intents and purposes the same as the one at 9 months - consultants generally do not consider the result as being materially different unless it has changed around 10-fold, because of the margins in the test. Therefore it would only be considered 'higher' around 0.005. Taking another PCR test today is just a sensible thing to do. I hope it comes back with anoher low number but you should not be unduly concerned in the interim - you might like to contact Jack's consultant to take some time to discuss this - I am sure he will be in a position to put your mind at rest. All the best - please do keep us all posted.

Hi Trish,

Nothing to be concerned about. The PCR test result will differ by a half a log if you retested using the same sample. So the 0.0008 result is the same as the 0.0005 result.

You need 3 consecutive results to establish a trend.

Hi Trish,
this pcr result would not be considered 'elevated'... it is, as others have said, the same as the previous one. Therefore be assured that Jack is responding very well to the drug and his levels of BCR/Abl are extremely low. He has now had 2 pcr's (9 months and 12 months) that are 3.5 log reductions... so this is likely to be the trend.
Best wishes,
Sandy

I had a Haem. appointment today

Monday 16th June 2008 - Blood Results came back.

Result is 0.001%

So how do you work out what that is in terms of responses to of Log.

I am still not with it in terms of how to read bloods

Diagnosed in August 2007 - so this is 10 months on glivec (Gleevec)

Please advise
