Does periods of prolonged stress affect cml?

I have been so very tired since mid August when I had to deal with the sudden death of my brother. Six weeks later my father-in-law passed away aged 96yrs after a very short illness. He played a large part in the family and is very sorely missed.

I do worry how this stress might affect me.

Hi Flora

I am so sorry you have been under so much strain - I understand completely! 3 months after I was diagnosed my father was admitted to hospital and he died 2 months later. So I went through a very worrying and stressful time. I am an only child and then had to cope with being the executor for his affairs as well. Does this affect CML? Who's to say...all I can say is that at the time, my results continued to trend downwards.

All the very best to you.
Janet

Hi Flora

Sorry to hear about your recent events and concerns about the affect of stress on CML. I have to say, it is something I have thought about many times, since my diagnosis in January 2001.

During that time, my results have gone in the wrong direction on at least two occasions, which resulted in a changes of treatment/dose. Firstly, from Interferon injections to 400mg of Glivec and on the second occasion, 400mg of Glivec to my current 600mg daily.

Both times, the change in results seemed to relate to stressful times in my life, such as a new job etc. I am convinced in my own mind that there is a link and actively try to avoid stress whenever possible.

I have asked my consultant the question and he has been unable to confirm or deny any link. It seems to be a grey area, but I would love to hear other people's opinons or find any hard evidence.

Good luck
Chris
