Links between radon in cornwall and leukaemia

Hi All - I was at the CML conference yesterday and Dr Goldman mentioned that there is a possible link between radon poisoning in cornwall and leukaemia.

Having done a bit of research I've found the relevant lancet paper and a radon map of UK which shows that I lived in a high-risk area.

Not that having a cause for my CML makes much difference but I am wondering if anyone else knows anything about this subject or if anyone else lives or has lived in Cornwall.

The conference yesterday was excellent and really informative. I found the news about advances in bone marrow transplant really positive and interesting. When I first went onto Glivec 8 yrs ago I was told it was unlikely I would be able to have a successful transplant in the future if the Glivec stopped working, it now appears this is not the case.

It also appears that not having a sibling donor is no longer a barrier either as half-matches could be made with my father or daughters or cord blood transplants are possible!

All great positive news!

Hi Lorraine, please can you let me have the link/reference for the map and paper. I am also very interested in finding out about Radon links and CML.

Great seminar on Saturday with lots of information, still trying to sort it all out in my CML brain!.

Hi Lorraine, I to was at the CML conference & found it very informative & I learnt a lot. I came away feeling full of promise for the future treatment & who knows possibley a cure to come.

I was aware that both Devon & Cornwall have the highest rate of CML in comparison to the rest of the country. Do you live in Cornwall? I live in Devon, not to far away! I would be interested in the link to the map. As you said, it wont help us now but is an interesting subject.
All the best,
Ali.

Hello Ali and Pennie - thanks for your comments. The Radon map of UK is available on the Health Protection Agency website. Hopefully this link will get you there:

I don't live in Cornwall anymore - am based in Norfolk now. But did live there as a child in the 70s.

Hope this helps

Lorraine :-)
