Prescription Charges

It was announced last year that cancer patients would be exempt from paying for prescriptions in 2009. I have been trying to find out when this starts but my local doctors surgery and local pharmacy don't know. Does anyone have any idea?

Hi

I found the following article in the independent, it looks like the government hope to phase this in during 2009 and only for specified cancers. These haven't been designated yet........

Hi I have found this and have spoken to the NHS business services dept who have said that we do not have to pay after 1st April 2009. You need to get a exemption certificate signed by your gp in march and send it to them. They will then issue an exemption card.

hope this helps

Dear Gary,
thanks a lot for providing this very helpful link. for ease of reference I have put the link under the 'essential reading' list at the bottom right hand side of this page.

As I ran round collecting all my prescriptions this morning; I wondered if post-transplant patients will be considered to still be 'cancer patients' and therefore qualify for free prescriptions?

When does one say that one is free from cancer? My haematologist suggested that it is 2/3 years post-transplant before I can consider myself cured!
