Diagnosed late Jan 09

Hi everybody
My name is Doug and I was diagnosed in January. I'm 58 years old and self employed and have no insurance. Any input on getting insurance with preexisting would be welcome.
I find myself unable to perform mentally as well as I used to. I feel like I'm in a fog and sometimes almost paralyzed as far as plowing forward and doing the things I need to do. A normal assumption would be that this is a symptom of stress or depression but in the past I've dealt with stress well and never got depressed and I don't feel depressed- I just feel mentally tired and sorta zoned out. Is the Glyvec contributing to my mental dysfunction? I would appreciate any input I could get.
Thx

Hi Doug, my daugher (17) is on 500mg Glivec per day, she has found her concentration levels are very low, also she is very forgetful. I think this could be to Glivec as she was very alert before being on in. she has been on it for 2 years now. Dawn xx

Doug
I was diagnosed 5 years ago age 40 (400mg Glivec ever since) and became aware fairly quickly that my short term memory was playing tricks on me - could not remember simple things like whether I'd switched off the cooker etc etc. I found i was much slower at helping my children with mental maths homework. This worried me hugely as I was convinced I must be developing Alzheimers on top of CML... Was hugely relieved to find through this site that a slight 'fogginess" is very common, seems to be directly related to Glivec - I think it has improved over time (it has certainly not got any worse) but is still discernible. I'm sure others will pitch in here to confirm that the fogginess is widespread. Please do not worry - blame the Glivec rather than stress or depression. Hope this helps. Now I am aware of my shortcomings I am simply more careful to check that everything is off before leaving the house....

Yes, I'm foggy!! I agree with Annie, it hasn't got any worse over the 3 years I've had CML. For me, it has meant that a lot of little things just disappear completely under the radar - tricky at work in particular. My previously 'grasshopper' mind isn't quite so 'grasshoppery' any more! I have learned to cope with the help of very understanding colleagues, a lot of humour, and an awful lot of 'I am SO sorry'!

Take care Doug, and try not to worry.

Janet
