Newly dx and pregnancy

I'm 26 and 2 months ago I was dx with CML in a routine blood test as I was 7 weeks pregnant, as this was a massive shock didn't cope so well and unfortunately lost the baby soon after. As for kids in the future my docotor has advised me he wants me to stay on Glevic for at least 2 years before we think about trying again and I just wanted to see if anyone else had had babies while having CML and how it worked out with going off Glevic as I've read a couple of posts on here from 2007 but nothing recently I'd really like to hear from the ladies who have had kids and how there going now???

Hi ,so sorry to hear you lost your baby, there has been a few ladies that have come off the glivec once the leukaemia is undetectable and have gone on to have babies,im sure they will be more than happy to talk to you.i was also 26 when i was dx ,where are u from?

Hi, so sorry to hear your news, i was diagnosed about 18mths ago just after i got married and we were desperate for children but obviously had to put it on hold. With a strange twist of fate i fell pregnant last october whilst on glivec (found out 4 wks in) and am 39wks now having stopped glivec straight away and having regular blood checks every 2wks. I cant believe i have made it this far and am still in good health with BCR coming backa as still in cytogenetic remission. There is hope and dont be disheartened as i know how it feels, you may feel that life is on hold but stick in there and let the drugs do there bit and hopefully things will work out. Hope this helps and dont hesitate to ask any questions as i know how little information there is out there on this topic .

Thanks for that, I'm from Brisbane, Australia where abouts are you from? How long have you been on glivec for? do you have kids? are there stories of where things have gone wrong as well that you know of as I would like to know all the facts from real people just not the figures from doctors

Wow so you fell pregnant on Glivec??? so is everything okay so far? wow your 39 weeks thats amazing you'll have to let me know how everything goes, so what treatment and drugs are you on during pregnancy? So you were in Cytogenetic remission while falling pregnant has your levels changed much at all? yeah it does feel like my life is on hold and it's been turned upside down, as I was fit and healthy. Also as I've never been one to like kids and after 2 1/2 years of being married I finally felt I was ready to have kids and then this happened, I'm still trying to learn all about it any hints on finding information? Where abouts are you from?

Hi again, yes i have a son ,i was dx just after he was born, they did think i had the cml during pregnancy, email me if you want and feel free to ask anything,kathy.prudence@homecall.co.uk
it helped me so much taking to others as they new exactly how i was feeling,i tried to hide everything from my family i didnt want to upset them, silly i know.xx

Hi Patrice, i live in the uk and i was in complete cytogenetic response when i fell pregnant not far off negative. I had been on glivec for 12 mths with no major side affects and durng pregnancy i have had no treatment as my white count and hb levels have been good. I will go back on glivec 2 weeks after the birth so no breastfeeding and i hope i will respond on it again. My levels have increased slightly but nothing major that had the doctors worrying but i guess everyone is different. I am very grateful to the wonders of glivec and although not ideal to concieve on the drug i think that what ever way you look at it you have to take a chance in some way. I will be 2 years diasgnosed in October and although as with you i was a young fit person (teach Phys Ed) i am extremely grateful for the opportunities the drug has given me. Its all about looking at what you can still do not about the restictions and they are only temporary. I will keep you posted on the arrival which i am hoping will be any day now as getting very fed up! My email is Fiona@cassidy62.fsnet.co.uk. Glad to help

That is what i want to hear too.... attimes my heart disagrees with the results. I am in germany and was dx with CML at 25yrs (this year). That was not good news though but hopefully, there will be another chance for her. I actually need the same too.

Hi everyone, I've been trying to post my progress on here for a while. I was diagnosed with CML in Nov 07 after a year on Glivec and on only 200 mg a day I did not respond to it. Stopped taking Glivec in Dec 08 and we decided to try for another baby. I am now 33 weeks pregnant and since being pregnant have been in remission and having my bloods done once a month. Although baby is well I have just had a BCR-ABL test done as the doctors fear the CML is back.If that's the case then they will start me on Interferon immediately. I am not so sure what the effects would be on the baby being on medication this late in the pregnancy so hopefully all will be well.

I am so happy that there are many of us who do not give up hope regardless of all the figures that doctors tend to give us. All the best to all of you and will keep on posting my progress on here.
