Still undetectable

Just posting after my visit yesterday to HH after stopping the Glivec in March.

My last PCR (taken end of June) was still undetectable. My hopes are rising now. HH said they were cautiously optimistic. The crux of the matter is that 50% of people relapse and although my PCR has been undetectable for almost 3 years now, HH pointed out that they do not know how deep that really was. It may be that the CML may come back at a much later date, depending how many CML cells I still have (it only takes 1 I suppose). But as HH said the longer I go the better things look. They will never tell me it has gone, but it may well be a very long time (if ever) before it comes back.
Interestingly, I have had 2 large eye bleeds in the last 2 months since coming off the Glivec, these gave me cause for concern, but apparently both my GP and HH are not concerned and say it is just a nuisance and nothing to worry about.
To my surprise my WBC has only reached 4, and both neutrophils and platelets are also at the bottom end of acceptable. I thought these would have returned to more mid range by now, but HH are not worried about anything. They also laughed when I pointed out my disappointment that the excess weight ( about 1.5 stones) I gained with the Glivec did not come off as easily as it went on. This is obviously something I need to work on (eventually!!!!!)
Things are looking good at present and I am not looking too far ahead, fingers crossed though.

Hi,
Great to hear of your good fortune . Hope
you will continue with many more PCRUs. My
wife just had her first PCRU. We are just so
happy seeing you remaining so without Glivec.
Hope to see many more good response from you.
take care.

Hi Des,
Great news from your side. My best wishes for ypur great results.

Well I saw my Haematologist today and we did the first tests since comming off Gleevec (400mg per day) at the beginning of May.
Remember we took this decision due to the severe side effects I was experiencing. I was in remission for 3+ years, so the Gleevec certainly worked for me.
The major problems I was experiencing were severe eye bleeds, eventually one every odd week. The swelling on my eyelids was also severe. My eyesight was affected with blurry vision, the consequence. Other side effects were mostly minor.

Soon after stopping Gleevec I still had two minor eye bleeds within the first two weeks, and none thereafter. Everything returned to normal.

Only the cell count was available and read as follows: Hb 15.8; WCC 7; Platelets 227.
This is inline with my past results.
My PCR results will only be availble in about 7 days. Unfortunately the test is being done by a different Lab., so the results may differ by 1 log.

I am under no illusions that I will have to go back on to Gleevec or similar sooner or later. But the holiday is great so far.
I will keep you posted when I get mt PCR results and the decision going forward.

Hello Des, I have been away for a few days so have just caught up with your continuing good news.

I remember reading that patients from the STIM trial who maintained PCRU status for >6 months where the ones who have maintained their drug free remissions.
....click here for brief report of the STIM study published in Blood Online Journal

Hopefully your next test will show you are still negative.
Best of luck,
Sandy

Hi all,

This is just a short note to let you know the results of my last PCR test done on 20/8/2009.
The BCR/ABL ratio was 0.00083.
This is obviously not an "Undetectable" result and therefor is an upwards movement in my ongoing results.
Unfortunately the test was done at a different lab that only has been doing PCR testing for a short while now.
I will have a follow up test done in mid October to check for any upward trends.

At this stage I am enjoying the freedom from the Gleevec side effects and feel absolutely great healthwise.
BTW. I have now been off treatment for 4 months.

Good luck to all my fellow bretheren.

Basil

Hi all,
I would like to share my good news with the forum, Des and those who follow this thread.

I received the results of my last PCR today and the results are fantastic.
BCR-ABL 9-22 Qualitative NOT DETECTED!!!

Two months prior (August) I returned a positive result although the BCR-ABL was 0.00083%.
This translated to a BCR/ABL:ABL Ratio of <0.00001% - but detectable.
This time around the BCR-ABL was 0.00013%.
The BCR/ABL:ABL Ratio of 0.00000.
As these results are from the same lab,I can only presume that the positive result in August was borderline as the test is very accurate and detailed.

Living without the side effects of Gleevec is great. No more eye bleeds, hair loss, swollen eyelids, etc, etc.
But I am a realist and know that sooner or later I may again call on the assistance of my trusted friend, Gleevec, to go into battle against arch enemy CML.

Regards to all

Basil
