Glivec / PCR and Pregnancy

Hi,

My name is Claudia Fernandez, I`m from Dominican Republic and I been with CML since 1999 and with Gleevec since 2001 and negative since 6 month after been using Gleevec.
Now I have 30 years old and want to have a child but I`m afraid to suspend Gleevec.
I read every post in this website about pregnancy and all of your experiences (Sharon, Amanda, Denise, etc) but all of the post are not of 2010 and I`ll like to get in touch of one of you and know more about your experience after the birth.

Sorry my wording, but I`m not so good in English (my native language is Spanish).

Well I hope some of you can contact me at claudia.fernandezf@gmail.com.

Thx.

Dear Claudia,
welcome to this discussion forum, and please do not worry about your English which is excellent. I wish I could speak Spanish as well as you speak English.......
As you have said, you have read all the posts on this forum about pregnancy whilst having CML and taking Glivec. There are many CML (women) patients that have had children but as you know it is not advisable to take Glivec whilst pregnant (at least not during the first trimester/3 months) as it is thought that when any possible effect on the fetus would occur.

I don't think that there is anything else to add other than you need to manage your disease whilst pregnant and therefore not taking Glivec. You can either elect to have leukophoresis or control your Ph+ cells with interferon (I think that is how Sharon managed during both of her pregnancies)

Having CML does not really change the experience of having a baby... during pregnancy or after the birth.... it is the same for all women, in that you cannot predict how is will go as it depends on the individual. Pregnancy is scary for most of us, even when we do not have a disease like CML, but it is also a unique, exciting and life changing experience.

I do hope that someone who can advise you further will make contact with you,
with best wishes,

Sandy
