Hi both-
Just wanted to say that I went to New York last year and got insurance with Free Spirit. I had been diagnosed with CML only a couple of months, but as the trip was booked and I was responding to treatment my conusltant gave me the okay.
Just before I left my GP insisted that I have the sine flu, seasonal flu and pneomoccocal flu jabs. This set off an extreme allergic reaction and on our second day in the big apple i ended up in an emergency room. I spent a night and a day in hospital and they gave me lots of ridiculous test, because they thought I was sufficiently insured.
Since then the insurance company have said they won't be paying any medical bills because I hadn't declared on my application form that I had been treated for a suspected bronchial infection shortly after I was diagnosed with CML, even though this had nothing to do with my hospilization in Manhattan.
I guess what I'm saying is that you need to check your small print soooooooo thoroughly, as if there is any error or get out for them not to pay any hospital fees, chances are they'll find it. Having said that, if you get the right insurance and complete it fully CML is absolutely no barrier to travelling.
Best-
Adam
PS We are so unbelieveably lucky to have the NHS in this country. The day I spent in what was supposedly Manhattan's top private hospital, was like something out of Scrubs, only less funny, much less informed and without the annoying music. Bottom line- Obama rocks & bring on the reform!!
