glevec reduction

Saw my consultant this week he suggested I cut down to 300mg daily, I'm unsure about this as I thought the optimum dose was 400mg, any views on this would be useful.

Hi Yvonne, did he state why he felt it best for you to cut down?

Bill

Dear Yvonne... what is the reason for you to drop the dose? 400mg is the recommended standard. Are you suffering from side effects?

Sandy

Hi Yvonne,

The only way you can be sure that it is OK to reduce your Gleevec to 300 mg is to have your serum level tested. If your serum level was at 1100 ng/ml on 400 mg of Gleevec, then it would be a blunder to lower your dose to 300 mg. If you are receiving a sub optimal dose of Gleevec you will become resistant to Gleevec and would have to look for a new drug for your CML.

Did he say why he wanted you on a lower dose?

Hi Yvonne

It is the first time I have posted anything on this site since I was diagnosed in September 09, although I have watched it regularily.

At first I had lots of side effects from the Glivec and my consultant cut my dose down for a while.  He then increased it slowly until I am now taking 300mg and 400mg on alternate days.  The result has been good and I am now not getting too many problems with it,just some fliud around the eyes and weight gain.My last PCR result was great, it was 0.002. So it still has a good result on the lower dose.

I hope this helps, as I was not sure at the time. Good luck with the decreased dose.

I am having a few problems with side effects so he suggested it, I have said no for the moment as he has put me on something for the nausea and sickness, I have been on glivec since april 2001 but the side effects have increased recently. He did suggest trying another drug but I am worried that it might not work so well on the cml I seem to bubble along with low pcr's 0.00 - 0.9 and have done since a couple of months of glivec.
