Nilotinib and stomach pains

Hi,

Can anyone help with info? My husband started taking Nilotinib (150mg am, 150mg pm) on Thursday. he started with stomach pains yesterday. He says it feels like his middle stomach area is bloated and constantly painful. Not jabs, just a constant pain.

Anyone out there had this? We were told to expect tummy problems, but that these would manifest themself with more frequent trips to the loo. This is not what he has.

Any insight would be helpful,

Many thanks

Hayley for John

Hi Hayley,  Tell John one of the major problems I had when starting Nilotinib was terrible constipation.  And I do mean terrible !!! Get him to monitor this, and take prune juice and perhaps try senna.  He needs to be very careful about this I ended up in hospital having enemas. Yuk

It might be a good idea to check in with the hospital and let them know about this, stomach pains is one of the -let yoiur doctor know - symptoms on the list of side effects. It might be the start of pancreatitus, and the quicker its identified the better.

Is he taking the tablets with the right starve time intervals?  and avoiding orange grapefruit and pomegrante?

Its 2 years since I started Nilotinib, after nearly 7 on glivec, and I feel great most of the time.  Wish him well

Pennie.

Hi Hayley,

I agree with Pennie, I had terrible trouble with my stomach initially, which was a complete turnaround from Glivec.  It is now completely fine and I achieved this by changing my diet. Prune juice, all bran, kiwi's and pears are all great.

But John should check with his doctor, hopefully its just one of the side effects you get in the first few weeks.  I have to say I'm a new woman on Nilotinib and feel great, however it took a few weeks for the side effects to settle down when I first started taking it.

All the best to you both

Lynn
