Hello.
I have been moved onto Dasatanib yesterday, I was not resistant to Glivec, I have been on it for 8 years now. 400mg daily. However I am intolerant of the higher dose due to being transfusion reliant in the past. The consultants and I felt it a good time to move onto Dasatanib, especially with the current situation.
My first night was awful.. I was sick, ran to loo lots and did not sleep one wink had pounding headache almost like a tight band around my head which has remained with me all day today. I have joint pains in my legs similar to when first diaganosed.. I feel dreadful.. only good thing was being able to take it and not worry about what food I was going to be able to keep down!
I know from reading posts on here that some of you have had similar experiences.. I just would like some reassurance that this will settle.. especially the insommnia..
How long did it take for side effects to ease.. I knew this might happen, just didn't expect them all straight off...
Michelle
You are here
Dasatanib please advice with side effects.. switched from Imatanib yesterday.
Hi
I have been on Dasatanib since last August and after a couple of month of minor rashes am now generally OK.
I was worried about the side effects and checked with the Consultant if I could take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, with the view that the medication would not be hitting the body in one go. He agreed it was OK and I have been doing that ever since.
May be worth a check with your consultant to confirm this approach is OK for you.
Good Luck

Hi Michelle - I switched to dasatanib after 4 years on imatinib early this year.
my first night was exactly the same as you, but the next night/day I was totally fine. Since then things have only got better generally than on the imatinib for me, so keep at it.
My negative side effects
1. that first night
2. suffer from acne everynow and then in strange parts of my body such as chest and shins :S
3. Have had a couple of very bad mouth ulcers
My Postive effects since moving
1. have been able to exercise for longer and arder than ever, including running 9-10kms 3 times a week
2. lost 1.5 stones, probably a lot to do with the above.
3. No muscle cramps anymore
4. No nausea and diaoreha that I had on imatininb
5. General feeling of well being and feeling better (maybe to do with #1 and #2)
6. PCR down to it lowest level at 0.029
7. reduced general feeling of tiredness and occasional bouts of exhaustion gone

Many thanks for your comments..I did sleep last night but had to take a sleeping pill in the end. I don't know if its a mixture of anxiety over making the switch or the actual drug making me unable to sleep. The joint pain in legs is still here and hot baths and hot water bottle.. help. Headache too but paracetamol keeping that at bay.
Its comfortaing to hear that you have had the same side effects and that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that the switch is a positive move. I am not sure they would have switched me yet if it hadn,t have been for all this agro with NICE. However they have wanted to do so for some time as although my PCR results are good and I am in cytogenetic remmision, every now and then I lose a nought here and there and then it satablisis again.
On a good note I was not sick again yesterday, I have taken it this morning and don't feel the horrid nausia I had with glivec.. I can't say energy levels are great yet, but I hope they will be as good as you say they will be..
Many Thanks... again
Michelle
I think like most people i had the bad heads but they have continued and my migraines are pretty bad now and i get mouth ulcers but that was all really. I may well be coming off Dasatinib now though as i have pleural effusion but i don't think that is a too common side effect. Hope it continues to get better for you
