Has anyone travelled to the USA recently?
Trying to find an insurer that won't rip me off.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks Linda
Hi
I have annual insurance with my credit card which covers me for everywhere - it's a fairly standard policy in terms of benefits and didn't cost any more once I had CML: the way the policy works is that I am covered as normal except for certain pre-existing medical conditions at the time of travel, and for cancer generally provided I have been in complete remission for 12 months. That's not uncommon.
Quite a few insurers will therefore cover you in the normal way, and at a normal price, but they may not cover you for CML related problems, unless and until you've been in full remission for a while. So, if you have a problem on holiday that is unrelated (an accident for example) then there should be no problem with that sort of policy, and it shouldn't cost you more.
The trouble arises if you want to be covered specifically for CML related problems (ie treatment or repatriation travel arising from CML). With many, if you ask for that specifically it can be very expensive. I wonder if that's worth it with CML, frankly.
I would get a few standard quotes and then check the small print - there may be some who will exclude any cover if you have a pre-existing condition although I've not seen many of those. Obviously avoid them. But I am sure you can find many others who will be fine subject to carving out the CML stuff. There are some links to companies in the FAQ section of the site. In my own case, I didn't bother to cover CML expressly at first although I am now covered anyway, fortunately.
