Nearest specialist centre

Can anyone help me please...where is the nearest specialist hospital to Newquay? A very dear friend of 45 years has been admitted to Treliske Hospital and been told he has AML. Apart from being pretty upset just now, I find it absolutely astonishing that he and I were in the same class at school in Hampshire and that I have CML and he has AML. He had surgery about two years ago when  kidney cancer was diagnosed, recent follow-up checks and given the total all-clear. I do not understand how someone already being closely monitored for his cancer, can suddenly be admitted as an emergency...

Struggling to make sense of this...

Hi Vickie,

Sorry to hear about your friend, he has been through the mill.. I am not too far away from newquay (I am in Exeter) & as far as I know the nearest specialist hospital for him would be Bristol. Prof Marks is very good. As I expect you already know, he can ask for shared care. Personally I go to The Hammersmith, London for my shared care as they are a centre of excellence.

What are they doing for your friend now as far as treatment?

Ali

Thanks Ali, he was admitted in the night as an emergency and had BMB today. All he knows at the moment is that he has AML...Now that you have kindly shared info with me, I can call the hospital and ensure he gets the best possible treatment. Not looking great though is it?

Vickie

Dear Vickie... sorry to hear of your friends diagnosis with AML. I would say that AML, as I am sure you know, is a very different disease from CML although CML in blast stage is similar- but I seem to remember one of my doctors telling me that it blast stage CML is actually more difficult to treat.

I imagine that he will be given high dose chemotherapy which will get him off the emergency list.. then maybe there will be a breather to sort out what he can do. SCT is the only option for possible long term survival I think. Although there might be experimental therapies out there.

I do hope things become clearer of the next few days.

best wishes,

Sandy
