Understanding CML: Expert Videos for Patients

Learning about chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) can feel overwhelming at first - but good information makes all the difference.

This collection of short videos, created by NHS specialists, explains every stage of CML in a way that’s easy to follow. From understanding what causes the condition and how it’s diagnosed, to exploring treatment options and living well on therapy, each video is designed to help you feel informed and supported.

Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or have been managing CML for some time, these trusted experts cover the questions patients ask most - using clear language and real-world experience.

Watch at your own pace, revisit topics any time, and gain confidence in understanding your care and the choices available to you.

This series of videos is in four modules:

Cause, diagnosis, and testing

Understanding what causes CML and how it’s diagnosed is the first step in feeling more confident about your care.

In this module you will learn about the basic biology behind CML and its genetic cause, how a diagnosis is made, and how to interpret your test results

Recently diagnosed - options and outlook

Being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) can bring many questions - but today, there’s real reason for hope.

In this module you’ll learn about what treatment options are available to you, what the outlook for CML patients is, and how you find practical and emotional support in your early days with a CML diagnosis

Living with CML

Once treatment begins, it can take time to understand how CML fits into everyday life - but you are not alone in that process.

In this module you’ll learn what the first few months of treatment might look like in a practical and emotional sense, what the common - and less common - side effects might be and how they can be dealt with, and how being treated with CML might affect your risk of other infections.

Changes to therapy

As time goes on, your CML treatment plan may change - and that’s completely normal. Adjusting therapy is often about fine‑tuning what works best for you.

In this module you’ll learn about when a dose of your medication could successfully be reduced, and how your results are monitored. You’ll also learn about whether it could, in some circumstances, be safe to stop treatment altogether, and what happens if a stem cell transplant is needed. Finally you’ll understand what clinical trials are and how they are advancing CML treatment all the time.
