Home remedies for side-effects

Hi All!

I last posted something back in August I think. I was still feeling rough quite often, with something feeling like a really bad hangover or cold. I was diagnosed in January and started on imatinib in February.

For the last month or so I've been largely feeling quite a bit better. I've realised that if I start feeling bad, a fizzy drink and one of those rehydration drinks like dioralyte completely clears my head. I don't know why this should be; I wonder if imatinib throws your mineral balance out or something. (I've been on phosphate tablets for a while too) Drinking lots of water didn't help me at all, I just bloated like a balloon and felt worse, like my head was bursting!

Has anyone else found that fizzy drinks help? I know some people swear by tonic water, but I'm curious to hear of anyone else's experiences.

I've also just started doing the tiniest bit of running - much more walking than running - and would welcome any top tips on how to gradually build things up again. I really don't want to over do it but am fed up with being so unfit!

All the best

Sue

Sue, quite a few people have (at Sandy's suggestion) used magnesium oil to help specifically with cramp. I play tennis 3-4 times/week, and do suffer from cramp more since I started glivec (over 5 years ago), and it does help. I also use a sports drink occasionally when I feel a bit low physically - used to keep them to rehydrate if I had a stomach bug, and I do find them useful after a really hard game. I'm back playing club league tennis and reached the final of the club veteran's tournament this year - my first appearance on finals day since I was a junior!

Incidentally, I buy magnesium oil from Amazon, but by going through http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk, I raise money for this web-site for free while I'm doing it!

Alastair, good to hear some feedback about using MagOil to counter side effects such as cramps, joint pain etc. Thanks also for the tip about buying through Amazon.I will try that in future- I still find regular use of Magnesium Oil helps my joints etc. and I am no longer treated with TKI having had a transplant, so I am sure TKI therapy makes things even worse.

On the subject of 'sports drinks'... maybe this is to do with the maintenance of blood sugar levels which is why you find them helpful after a hard game of tennis?

Well done with you club league tennis- sounds like you are doing well;o)

Will you be going to Glasgow?

Sandy

Thanks for the tip I will give this a go too! I do get cramp in my toes sometimes, and my joints are a bit odd as well, not sure if this is just old age setting in!

Good to hear about your tennis, sounds like you are very fit.

All the best

Sue

For those who are/might be interested in learning more about symptoms of low magnesium and how to best supplement with this important mineral, please take a look at the following link to
'Magnesium for Life/Transdermal Therapy' here www.magnesiumforlife.com

"Magnesium deficiency is often misdiagnosed because it does not show up in blood tests – only 1% of the body’s magnesium is stored in the blood.

Most doctors and laboratories don’t even include magnesium status in routine blood tests. Thus, most doctors don’t know when their patients are deficient in magnesium, even though studies show that the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium. Consider Dr. Norman Shealy’s statements, “Every known illness is associated with a magnesium deficiency” and that, “magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every cell in the body. A magnesium deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than any other nutrient.” "

"A full outline of magnesium deficiency was beautifully presented in a recent article by Dr. Sidney Baker. “Magnesium deficiency can affect virtually every organ system of the body. With regard to skeletal muscle, one may experience twitches, cramps, muscle tension, muscle soreness, including back aches, neck pain, tension headaches and jaw joint (or TMJ) dysfunction. Also, one may experience chest tightness or a peculiar sensation that he can’t take a deep breath. Sometimes a person may sigh a lot.”"
