Shingles

Hi

Not been in here for a while. Hope that all who I know on here are doing well.

My mum has been diagnosed with shingles. I have been round her house before she
Was diagnosed. I would like to know if it is safe for me to help her as I have
Read that it may not be good if your immune system is low. Which I
Presume is the case with cml and I'm taking Glivec.

Any ideas???

Angela

Hi Angela,
Though you can't get Shingles from another person, you can get Chicken Pox if you've never had it before.

Hi Angela,

people who are immuno-compromised -i.e in general those with low white cell counts- should protect against contact with anyone who has shingles or any other infection. although you have CML and you are treated with imatinib/Glivec this does not necessarily mean your white cell count (particularly your neutrophils) are abnormally low. I am assuming your blood counts are within normal ranges? If so you should be OK to help support your mum.

Best wishes,
Sandy
