pcr test results changed

Hi I have had cml since 1998, my last test result came back as 0.287 but before that it was always 0.00. The only other time that happened was in 2010. My doctor said dont worry we will do another test in 3 months. Its hard not to worry though, any suggestions. I have been on gleevec for about 10 years now.

Hi,

Your haematologist is probably right to tell you not to worry. results can and do change owing to a number of factors to do with any particular sample sent for testing. If the last one was in some way not an optimal sample (e.g not enough normal control genes in the sample - there should be at least 10,000 copies of the normal gene used as a control, such as Abl or BCR) or if the sample was stored incorrectly or was late in getting to the lab, then it would affect the PCR result.

This is more than likely a 'blip' rather than a true reflection of your BCR-ABL %. If you are still worried you should contact your doctor and ask if the level of control gene was adequate... and also ask if you could bring forward you next PCR.
But I am sure all will be well,

Sandy

Thank you for taking the time to tell me that. Do you think that since for all of those years it was zero that it would change that much in 3 months, and is that a big change from 0.00?

It may also be worth checking to see if the testing they are using is more sensitive - some people have had slight increases due to changes in the way the levels are monitored.
You really should not worry unless there is a trend (more than three in a row?) as you still have fantastic results
K :-)

I know I shouldn't but it is very hard, i have a 6 and 12 year old. Can this go to another stage while still on gleevec, does it happen that fast or will there be other problems.

I think everyone worries about their results and any changes in them - i should imagine that doesn't change however long you have been diagnosed. Your consultant doesn't seem too worried and repeating the test should give a better indication - if you are really worried you could always ask to repeat the test a bit sooner.
If you are losing your response there are a number of other drugs that you can access which should allow you to get a deeper response but until you have had a further test done you should try not to worry.

Once again thank you, everyone tells me not to worry and I am really trying to.

According to my onc you have crossed the bridge. ( he belives that if you can cross the 10 year mark resonsblely well, your cml is history provided you take the tki for maintenance. )

Relax. You have already crossed the bridge :)

Thanks i needed that I its hard to get back to my regularly happy self and I dont even feel like eating sometimes.
