Hi Sandy,
Have been on Glivec/Imatinib for over 8 years and now have gained complete molecular response so we are having PCRs every six months now which is good news.
I have an issue with sensitivity to the sun and have noticed some small changes in my face and particularily around the nose so am seeing a dermoltologist very soon to check on changes.Apparently there has been some work done on the issue of skin thinning and pigmentation changes due to prolonged use of imatinib;very rarely patients have found a threat of sqamous cell carcinoma developing.
In the interim am covering up with a wide brimmed hat in the sun and using SPF50 protection for the face in the sun.
I am interested if other CML patients have experienced any sun sensitivity due to prolonged use of TKIs and also if they have found any sunscreen rich in zinc or titanium at factor 50 level that has been especially effective in protecting the skin.
Have Googled "Glivec and sun sensitivity" and a few interesting items come up.For instance with time and skin becoming thinner one is more susceptible to skin tear and bruising; skin healing may take longer as well. Also some patients have found that they no longer tan because the melatonin mechanism fails to operate and burning from the sun is more likely and exceptionally pigmentation changes.
I have also found that I am susceptible to excessive heat so holidays in the tropics are no longer appealing.
I understand that there is some discussion as to whether CML patients are more at risk from other malignancies-was this mentioned at the last Gateshead gathering and the conclusion was uncertain?
Any views would be helpful
With best wishes
John

Skin thinning and increased sensitivity to sun after prolonged use of TKIs
Hi John,
I spent 20 minutes out in the sun yesterday afternoon. Whilst I did not burn badly, I did get a couple of "red face" comments at work today. I've never been the bronzed Adonis, but I do seem to burn particularly easy these days. Last May, I spent an hour and a half out at the Arsenal FA Cup homecoming parade (looking for shade for most of it!) and burnt really nastily on my neck.
Hats and SPF 50 are the order of the day these days!
PS. I'm on dasatinib
David.
I have found I burn really easily now in the sun - even under an umbrella. I avoid sitting in the sun now and use factor 50 if outside in sunny weather. I also seem to operate at a higher temperature than everyone else in that I am very sensitive to heat. This leads to discussions in our house regarding central heating as everyone else is cold while I'm not.
I've been on Imatinib since Sept 2009 and although I'm on DESTINY and half dosage, it's too early to tell if I'm still as sun sensitive - haven't risked it yet in this hot weather ( well warm to everyone else).
Best
Chrissie
