cramps and diarrhea

Categories:

Does anyone have any suggestions for easing the cramps and diarrhea? I have been on imatinib 400 mg for the past 9 months. My numbers are good. After wading through a rash and mouth ulcers, things were settling down until two days ago. Then I began to feel fatigued, have stomach cramps and diarrhea. Many of you say you cycle through these kinds of episodes periodically. Just wondering how you cope with them.

For the cramps I suggest you to be well hydrated and take magnesium!

Thanks Snowman 35, I do take Mg every evening, and stay fairly hydrated. I have to be careful with fluids because I have low sodium levels and too much fluid has causes my sodium levels to drop. This has happened several times since October. One event put me in the hospital for 2 days.

Hi, I had really bad diarrhoea when I first started on Imatinib  I couldn't go anywhere , it's like a rollercoaster it wouldn't stop, so I started taking one Imodium in the morning for a few days and it stopped it like magic ,then I just took the odd one if I was going out for the day .I was told initially to drink lots and lots of water but this just made the diarrhoea worse .Hope this helps ,Good Luck,Denise.

Thanks Felix. I pondered Imodium but was not sure about taking it as I seem to go from diarrhea to constipation pretty quickly. But I will give it a try.

Hlo SD. I was told by a nutritionist that TKIs are known for GI upset and causing sensitivity when there was none prior to starting medication. Only suggestion I have is to look at your diet. Maybe you have developed a sensitivity to insoluble fiber like I have since starting TKI medication.

That is a good point, Alaina. Since the spring/summer here, I have been eating more fresh veggies from our garden (chard, lettuce) and some purchased corn. This is definitely more fiber than I consume over the winter months.. I am hoping my gut just needs to adjust, but maybe some dietary tweaking will help. Thanks for this suggestion, and one I hadn't considered.

No problem, SD. If things get better with your gut, please share your nutrition regimen as I would like to hear what has worked well for you.

I will do that. I think right now it is just trying to avoid abrupt changes in diet.
