Vitamin D and other supplements

Categories:

Hello CMLers,

We had our first consultation with our Dr. last week which went well. The results from bone marrow biopsy  and bloods came out good, in short blasts 2%. WBC 53(was 33 at the first test) platelets slightly elevated to 470. She also had an echocardiogram and scans of her organs which all came our great, normal size of the liver and the spleen. In addition she had her eggs frozen last Wednesday which also went well. We are very thankful that we received the ‘full package’ and currently receiving great care.

The consultant has suggested we start from a gen2 tki as we hoped for and we decided to go on Sprycel and will be stArting next week. We are hoping to get a fast response to the treatment (our ‘target’ is to try tfr in 5-7 years time and start a family or at least to be able to come off TKI through the course of the pregnancy ,(we are both 22))Therefore, the plan of action is to try and increase the effectiveness of the drug through supplementation and  nutrition.

In regards to the vitamin D we would like to increase her serum to 200 nmo/l its currently at 120. We are supplementing 10,000ui daily with vitamin k2 and from my understanding it will take around 3 months to achieve the desired levels ( is that correct?) we will be monitoring her d3 levels closely.

Curcumin, we also started to take the c3 complex aiming to get 2g daily.
Magnesium, we supplement malate and citrate daily at lower doses (we get the majority of magnesium from our foods)
We had also started to supplement Zinc at 25mg daily.

Vitamin C we aim to supplement 2000mg daily

Lately we had researched the benefits of Selenium and had started to add this to our diet through eating Brazilian nuts.

Any other suggestions on supplementation or nutrition , perhaps experiences on what works for you ?  Also by trying to increase the effectiveness of the drug, the other aim is to reduce any side effects that might occur or even prevent them.

Anyone here on a low carb high fat diet? I have been on the lifestyle for over 4 years and doing well , my partner still consumes less carbs than the ‘normal’ person, but isn’t as strict on nutrition as myself.

Looking forward for your replies :)

10,000 IU's per day for 3 months during summer will be excessive. As long as you are testing D levels, watch closely.

I take 5,000 IU's per day in summer and my blood level is around 200 nmol/l. I do not take any vitamin D3 supplement on days I am in the sun (running, diving) around noon time in summer.

Consider taking 200 mcg vitamin K2 (as MK-7) which will help keep vitamin D from going toxic.

Selenium at 200 mcg per day is good. Do not take selenium supplements on any day you are eating Brazil nuts.

Supplement with magnesium 400 mg/day. Regardless if you feel your food has plenty. It doesn't.

split your doses of vitamin C to 500 mg at a time. The body only absorbs/uses 500 mg in a 4 hour period. If you take in too much at one time, the excess is simply excreted. By splitting your dose throughout the day, you maximize its benefit, but some studies are showing that 500 mg per day yields very good anti-cancer/anti-inflammation.

Curcumin C3 is good. Minimum dose is 2 grams per day for CML patients, but in the beginning, upwards of 8 grams per day is needed. I often take 4 grams per day - and on days where I have a headache developing - I take Curcumin instead of aspirin.

As CML trends down, consider lowering drug dose once PCR < 0.1%. All TKI drugs, especially dasatinib suppress the natural immune system. By loweriing dose to find your personal "sweet" spot, you balance effective treatment with overall response. In my case, it was only when I lowered my dasatinib dose to 20 mg per day my CML collapsed and became "undetectable". I am now off drug for over a year (remaining undetectable so far).

(keeping vitamin D within a range of 138 nmol/L - 200 nmol/L should eliminate blast cell count from appearing. Zero blasts is an indication vitamin D is sufficient. Vitamin D facilitates blast cell differentiation. Blast cells do not stick around when there is plenty of vitamin D - including leukemic blast cells)

Thanks Scuba for the reply, really helps out alot. On our consultation we had asked our Dr. on his opinion on dose reduction and he also thinks that  its the way to go when pcr levels are below 0.1.

Will definetly split the dose of vitaminC thanks for the link :), in regards to the curcumin C3 we can't seem to find anything that goes above 500mg per tablet, therefore to achieve 4 grams will require to swallow 8 tablets daily which seems alot, can you recommend any brands that have a higher dosage per tablet? We will also increase our supplementation of Magnesium to 400mg/day.

Scuba, extra question on vit d3 sans being outdoors: someone would need to have significant areas of skinnexposed to get vit d benefit of being outdoors, right?

I have found this product which is 1000mg, the ingredients and values seems to be okay. Could you confirm if this is a good c3 product, its hard to find sabinsa c3 complex here in the UK,but this one has very similar ingridients. When trying to get 8g daily it can get pretty expensive aswell, just like everything nowadays. But im sure its worth the money based on the benefits it provides .

Yes - Arms shoulders legs can do it, but back is best. And amount of time. Lying flat in the sun at the beach at noon in summer for about 20 minutes can provide plenty of vitamin D.
